Ongoing artwork in S4/5

Today we started off the class with some critical evaluation of the work of Peter Howson. After that everyone continued working on their design projects. Here are some of the things they were doing:

Rebecca and Megan were using Fantasy Film and wire to create translucent shapes for embellishing their work:

Megan tried out a new kind of spray dying technique for clothes in order to get a deeper colour of purple in her dress:

Gabriella sewed some netted ruffles as an overskirt on her design:

S2 still life

Like S1 yesterday, S2 were working on their observational drawing skills today. Here they all are hard at work... some of them are camera shy though!

Butterfly options...

Rebecca has been experimenting with an organza butterfly pattern on the waistcoat she is designing. She cut out a simplified butterfly shape from different colours of organza, layered them together and stitched them with metallic thread.

Which way of positioning them do you prefer?

The Whole Town is Sleeping...

For their final unit and examination performance, S3 dramatists have devised a short play based around the short story they have been studying in English. The play is full of suspense and has some unexpected twists...

The class have decided to set it in the 1920s so we spent some time today looking for period costumes, props and set.

S1 still life

S1 were working on their observational drawing skills today, looking at proportion, scale and composition. This is the still life they had to draw. Although they only got as far as completing a sketched outline today, I was pleased with the results! Below you can see the work of Daria, Nicol and Conor:

S3 Critical Studies!

S3 have made a good start back. We took time out of our design work this week to do some critical evaluation of the work of Van Gogh. Individually and then as a group we studied and discussed some of his portraits on Monday. Pupils then selected a painting and undertook a critical study exercise as homework. Today they reported back in the form of a mini presentation.

I was really pleased with everyone's work - each pupil produced a good piece of evaluation!

A good start back for S4/5

S4/5 have picked up where they left off last term in their design work - things are beginning to take shape...

Gabriella has been working on a dollar skirt for her Casino outfit:

Yesterday Massimo used a colour-stop liquid to draw a dragon's claw pattern onto his Chinese themed T-shirt. Today he is dying the t-shirt and tomorrow he will wash out the colour-stop to leave the white outline of his design:

Megan and Rebecca have both been working with fabrics - sewing and pinning as required:

This is the insect inspired waistcoat Rebecca has been making - it has been inspired by a ladybird's spots and the shape of a butterfly wing. She is also making small butterfly applique shapes using organza to sew on to her design:

Megan has been dying fabric, pinning and cutting materials and sewing... she is making great progress on her dress and it is really beginning to take shape!
