Fruity BC!

This week we rounded off our culinary learning with Mrs Mackenzie-Smith, who taught us how to make fruit bouquets. It was great making flowers from melons, pineapple, strawberries and lots of other fruits! Pupils really enjoyed the chance to be creative- we split in to two teams and competed to make the best bouquet:)

Thank you to Mrs MS for coming in!

Lift the Label

Today S2 were very brave and took the assembly!
The class were telling the rest of the secondary pupils about their research into where many of our clothes are made. Using Tearfund's Lift the Label campaign, the class discovered that many factory workers in the Third World who make the clothes that are sold in the U.K. receive a meagre wage, work extremely long hours in often dangerous and uncomfortable conditions.

First of all, we had a quiz. Some pupils were asked to put themselves in these factory workers' shoes and imagine what they would do in certain situations. This highlighted the fact that many of these people have had their basic human rights taken away from them.
Another group used a clothes calculator on the Tearfund website to reveal that some workers only receive 0.5% of the price we pay for a pair of jeans. So, if you pay £30 for a pair of jeans, the person who made them might only have earned 15p!
Some of the boys showed a Keynote presentation outlining the horrific conditions in many Third World factories.
.
Angus explained that each member of the class wrote a letter to a high street shop and asked them to join the Ethical Trading Initiative which ensures ethical codes of conduct are in operation in factories world-wide.

Finally, Jennifer summed up the results of the action we took. Next, New Look and Tesco all replied to tell us they had already taken steps guarantee safe and fair conditions for the people who make the clothes they sell.

Sunny days!

S4 decided to work outside during art today as the weather was so nice. Megan also finished the still life painting she has been working on - excellent work!

S4 Monologues

S4 were working on characterisation and their individual performance skills today. They each had 5o mins to prepare an unseen monologue for presentation. They had to draw out the personality traits of their character as well as their background information of their life before deciding how to convey this to the audience. It was good fun!

This was just a practice run and we will revisit it again after study leave.

S3 revision

S3 Int 2 artists were all revising hard yesterday for a second art prelim today. They have to answer 4 short essay questions - 2 on previously unseen artworks or designs and 2 on the life and work of artists and designers they have studied. Everyone passed - well done!

Some S1 pupils had been working on bag making with Jane Fraser in Broader Curriculum last term. She has been coming back in during art periods to help get them finished. Here you can see Daria's and Amy's - they look fantastic! Well done to the pupils and thanks very much to Jane for all her hard work!

Biomimicry project

S1 were working with miss bell during art today in order to research technological developments inspired by nature. They are well on the way with their poster designs and now have the factual information required too. They will complete them next week.

Here is an example of the Bionic car based on a blowfish...

In the wars...

With some of their class off for study leave, the remaining S5 dramatists decided to beat up the computing people today...

Ok, so they were actually only practising the stage make up skills they have been working on recently... but I think you'll agree that they definitely managed to create some quite realistic effects!
