Baroque Around the Clock!

In S1/2 music we are spending some time asking the question 'how has the music of the past shaped the music I listen to today?' We are studying music through time, and have so far investigated the Medieval and Renaissance eras. Today, we began looking at the Baroque era, and the pupils were somewhat astonished to discover they recognised quite a few of the pieces we listened to!

We heard extracts from Pachelbel's Canon in D, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Bach's Magnificat, Handel's Messiah, and a montage of extracts from some of Purcell's work.

Over the next few lessons, pupils will investigate some of these famous Baroque composers, and find out some little known facts! Did you know that Bach had 25 children?! Or that Handel's father was a barber- surgeon? Or that Vivaldi died in abject poverty and was buried in an unmarked grave?

Watch this space for more info, as S1/2 continue their journey into the past!
